Background

Aquaporinsselectivelyconductwatermoleculesinandoutofthecell,whilepreventingthepassageofionsandothersolutes.Knownaswaterchannels,theyareintegralmembraneporeproteins.Aquaporin2isthevasopressin-regulatedwaterchanneloftheapicalmembraneofcollectingductcells.Itislocatedinkidneyepithelialcellsandusuallyliesdormantinintracellularvesiclemembranes.Whenitisneededvasopressinbindstothecellsurfacevasopressinreceptor,activatingasignalingpathwaythatcauseAQP2containingvesiclestofusewiththeplasmamembranesotheAQP2canbeusedbythecell.DefectsinAQP2areacauseofanautosomaldominantformofnephrogenicdiabetesinsipidus(NDI).
